The Algonquin

St. Andrews By-the-Sea, New Brunswick

Our redesign of the historic Algonquin Golf Course centered on revealing the vistas which led to the course being built in the first place. The project’s scope included tree removals to restore sweeping views of the St. Croix River and Passamaquoddy Bay (part of the Bay of Fundy). The reworking of the green complex and approach at the first hole was completed with the aim of promoting a ground game and the removal of a penal water crossing in front of the green. A new green complex and tees were introduced on the fourth hole, while the sixth hole was lengthened and a new green complex was added. The routing was changed, with a completely new tenth and eleventh holes being added. Significant changes were also made to the twelfth and thirteenth holes, and both holes now benefit from an improved connection with the rugged shoreline. The sixteenth hole was lengthened, with the addition of a new green complex and tees. The course’s bunker scheme and style was completely reworked, with the aim of reflecting Algonquin’s design history – particularly its link to Donald Ross.

Roles:  Rod Whitman (Golf Course Architect); Keith Cutten (Project Manager and Lead Shaper).
